Today is a special day for me, one I celebrate every year. On this day thirty-two years ago, I arrived in these United States. I believe my first words upon stepping outside were 'What the heck?' Having lived all my life up to that point in Africa, I had never experienced anything like the heat and humidity of an Ohio summer. In that spirit, what the heck did I read this week?

Dual enrollment datapalooza

The Department of Education, for the first time, released data on dual enrollment that provide a more detailed picture of this growing and important phenomenon. Dual enrollment is strongly shaped by state policy; therefore, it naturally varies considerably by state. That's a bit of an understatement.

Percent dual enrollment per state for community colleges

Over half of all students in community colleges in Idaho and Indiana are dual-enrolled high school students, although high schoolers are 21% of community college enrollment nationwide. Idaho also leads the nation in the percentage of high school students who are dual enrolled in four-year institutions. Dual enrollment is happening at four-year institutions as well, although the numbers are far lower than in community colleges.
