Happy St. David’s Day to all who celebrate! I know we have at least one reader in Wales, though he is a Yorkshireman, so I suspect I am on my own with my Welsh cakes and bara brith. Aside from recipes for those two treats, what else did I read this week?

They have their work cut out for them

Another week, another 15 or so new surveys about AI in higher education. OK, I’m exaggerating a little, but only a little.

One of the most insightful survey reports this week came from the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) in collaboration with Elon University. The survey contains a wealth of interesting information, but the key takeaway for me is the challenge facing higher education leaders as they try to understand AI and integrate it into their institutions.

Most leaders believe AI will reshape the typical teaching model at their institutions. I may be overly optimistic, but I see this as a positive development.

At the same time, most leaders do not believe their institutions are prepared to take on this challenge (or any other major initiative). Interestingly, when broken down by size, smaller institutions (with fewer than 3,000 students) appear to have taken more steps toward preparedness.

The obstacles, particularly regarding teaching, seem substantial.

I predict full employment for those whose jobs involve persuading and guiding faculty in the use of AI in teaching.
