Dual enrollment, like teenagers, growing fast but unevenly

Dual enrollment (DE), where high school students take university-level courses while still in secondary school, has been growing at a furious pace in recent years. According to the latest IPEDS data, that growth shows no signs of slowing. A recent post on the Community College Research Center blog explores this growth.

In the 2023-24 academic year, there were 2.8 million dual enrollment students—a 12.7% increase over the prior year. That’s 300,000 additional students taking college courses in high school.

Most of that growth was concentrated in community colleges and public institutions overall. Community colleges alone accounted for more than 70% of all dual enrollment last year.

Growth was not spread evenly geographically however. But dual enrollment did grow in all states except Mississippi and Utah (was it something I said?).
