Upcoming Events and Recent Podcasts – April through June 2020
I have some free events that readers may be interested in, that either were published in the past few weeks or are scheduled in the next few weeks. None of them, unfortunately, involve travel.
Rod’s Pulse Podcast released a new podcast episode where Rod Murray and I discussed our recent experience and motivations behind the POET Readings and COVID Transitions podcasts, the importance of instructional design, and issues higher ed faces with the Fall 2020 term. Video version also available.
I will be on the Thursday, June 4th, Future Trends Forum at 11am PDT with Bryan Alexander, discussing “Will classes be online or otherwise this fall?”
On Tuesday, June 9th at 10am PDT, I’ll be on with Contact Nord discussing “The Future of Learning Management Systems.”
The PhilOnEdTech blog posts since the beginning of April are available at POET Readings as podcast version.
Over at MindWires, we now have 7 episodes in our COVID Transitions podcast, where Kevin Kelly, Jeanette Wiseman and I discuss the issues that higher education faces in transitioning to hybrid and online modalities due to the pandemic. All episodes have a full transcript available.
Episode 7: Practical Advice for HyFlex – In this episode, Jeanette Wiseman and Kevin Kelly discuss some of the practical issues faced by students, instructors, and institutions when implementing HyFlex models.
Episode 6: The Floodgates – In this episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss multiple campus and system plans for Fall 2020, with many schools going public with reopening (hybrid) or staying online announcements over the past week.
Episode 5: California Dreaming – In this episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss multiple news items coming out of California that could be an early view into nationwide reactions – Cal State system remaining (mostly) virtual through Fall 2020 and California’s revised budget and its impact on higher education.
Episode 4: HyFlex Updates and the Strong Get Stronger – Updates on HyFlex based on previous blog posts and podcasts, followed by discussion of social infrastructure of eLearning
Episode 3: Enter Darkness – In this episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss how different the Fall 2020 decision will be for campus decision-makers than was the Spring 2020 move to remote. The recent move was easy, in a way, with a binary choice and little second-guessing. Fall will be different.
Episode 2: Difficulty and Value of Student Input – In this episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss value of getting student input while making plans for Fall 2020. But that’s not always simple to do, or at least common to do.
Episode 1: Considering Hybrid (Flexible) Models – In this episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss the an overlooked aspect of the COVID response from higher education. Beyond traditional face-to-face models, and fully online models, there is a vast middle ground of hybrid – the combination of face-to-face and online components. Added this is the concept of Hybrid Flexible.
Pilot Episode: The Shift to Thinking About Fall 2020 Term – In our inaugural podcast episode, Phil Hill, Jeanette Wiseman, and Kevin Kelly discuss the phased transition that higher education is going through as a result of COVID-19 towards increased online and hybrid educational models. This discussion builds off of the multi-phase response of higher education to COVID-19 as described in this blog post.
