It has been a week jam packed with news – some gloomy and some hopeful, and my reading reflected that. What do I have to share with you this week?

Hard times in the land down under

In a series of posts, Andrew Norton shows the grim state of some of the Australian higher education sector. Based on the finance reports for 2022 just released by the Australian Department of Education, the sector is facing some challenges. I had seen hints of this as individual universities released financial reports, with many showing declining student numbers and deficits, but this macro view is helpful.

However, the problems are not evenly distributed across the sector.

Unlike in the US, there does not seem to be an obvious pattern when looking at the deficits. Five of the six schools with the largest deficits are members of the prestigious Group of Eight and are highly ranked, nationally and internationally.
