tl;dr—I’m releasing a new program risk report generator that provides institution-specific risk analysis coming from the new accountability and graduate loan limit rules for US higher education.
The Strategic Program-Review Imperative
A new survey from ACE and five partner associations captures the challenge facing graduate and professional education as the new federal loan rules take effect. Nearly one-third of respondents said their institutions, schools, or programs were still deciding what changes to make. The most requested information was benchmarking on how peer institutions are responding, selected by 45%. Half reported that students were more concerned about their finances than usual.
The survey shows the need to turn policy analysis into institutional strategy: understanding students’ financing gaps, assessing institutional aid options, and deciding where programs need closer attention.
Earnings accountability deserves the same institutional lens. An October 14 analysis from the PEER Center estimates that programs projected to fail the new standards enroll just 2.5% of federally aided students nationally. Its detailed tables nevertheless identify roughly 31,000 bachelor’s students and 37,000 master’s students receiving federal aid in programs projected to fail. Degree programs are part of this exposure, and the institutional impact can be far greater than national aggregates.
