Last month I published two posts exploring what I called the hidden geography of online higher education. Using NC-SARA exclusive distance education data, combined with IPEDS where needed, the analysis showed that online higher ed is not nearly as borderless as we often assume. Instead, the data reveal a structured market: some states retain most of their online students, some serve as major targets for out-of-state providers, and others leak substantial demand across borders.

Those initial posts focused on the national picture and a handful of examples. I did have several readers ask: What does my state look like?

For On EdTech+ subscribers, I’m releasing a special report with charts and summaries for all 50 states plus DC.

Chart for Illinois

The report includes:

  • a short national overview;

  • a chart for each state; and

  • brief observations highlighting the main market pattern in each case.

The goal is not to turn every state into a full narrative analysis, but to give premium subscribers the complete state-by-state picture behind the Hidden Geography posts.
