When online education took off across higher ed in the 2010s, for-profit and nonprofit alike, the online itself was the focus — a new revenue line, a way to reach non-traditional students, above all a way to make the campus's location stop mattering. I described how that's shifted on a recent Tech in EdTech episode [quotes lightly edited for clarity].

Online was the point — a new revenue opportunity. [snip] But now students are demanding greater connectivity: to engage with faculty, with classmates, to feel connected to the program. We need to view modality as more like a tool, a set of tools, and we pull and mix them in the right way for today's student.

The conversation ranged across enrollment, modality, the LMS, vendor relationships, and AI — topics that don't obviously belong in the same discussion. It was only afterward, listening back, that I caught what I'd missed while talking.

I had given the same answer six times.
