IPEDS has released the latest 2024-25 12-month enrollment data. The Fall enrollment data series has been tracking distance education modalities since 2012, and the 12-month series has been doing so since 2021. But for distance education, which relies more heavily on part-time enrollments and starts throughout the year, the 12-month unduplicated headcount is a better metric for heavily-online schools.
Note that the latest Fall enrollment data was for Fall 2024, and this release is more recent in that it captures enrollments through June 2025.
Exclusive DE = exclusive distance education, students take all courses online; Some DE = some distance education, students take some but not all courses online; ALO DE = at least one distance education, combining the two categories above; No DE = no distance education, students take no online courses
I plan to put out a public OnEdTech profile based on the new data early next week. For premium subscribers, treat this post as an early view.
